The Social Media Playbook Nobody Gave You — Until Now

August 24, 2026

Most local business owners know they should be posting on social media. They just don't know what to post, when to post it, or whether any of it is actually working. So they post sporadically, get frustrated, and quietly give up.

This cheat sheet fixes that.

No dancing. No trends. No trying to go viral. Just a simple, repeatable system for turning your Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok into tools that generate real calls, clicks, and foot traffic.

The Only Goal That Matters

Before we get into what to post, get clear on one thing: the goal of your social media is not likes. It's not followers. It's not engagement for the sake of engagement.

The goal is to make your phone ring, your website get visited, and your door get walked through.

Every post you create should connect — directly or indirectly — to one of those three outcomes. If it doesn't, it's not working for your business. It's just noise.

The 4 Post Types That Actually Drive Results

You don't need infinite content ideas. You need four types of posts, rotated consistently. Here they are.

  1. The Proof Post
Show your work. Before and afters. Finished jobs. Happy customers (with permission). A project in progress. These posts build trust faster than any ad because they show — not tell — what you're capable of. Caption it simply: what the problem was, what you did, what the result was. End with a soft call to action.

"Just finished this kitchen remodel in [City]. If your kitchen has seen better days, we'd love to help. Link in bio or call us at [number]."

  1. The Tip Post
Give away one genuinely useful piece of advice related to your industry. A plumber sharing three signs your water heater is about to fail. A salon owner explaining why you should deep condition before coloring. A landscaper sharing the best time of year to aerate your lawn.

This type of post positions you as the expert — the person worth calling when they actually need help. It builds authority quietly and consistently over time.

  1. The Human Post
Introduce your team. Share a behind-the-scenes moment. Post a photo from a community event you attended or sponsored. Celebrate a work anniversary or a milestone.

People hire people they like. The businesses that show the humans behind the logo consistently outperform the ones that only post polished promotional content. You don't have to overshare — just show up as a real business run by real people.

  1. The Direct Ask
Once a week, it's completely acceptable to just... ask for the business. A current promotion. A reminder that you're booking for the season. A limited availability callout. A direct link to schedule an appointment.

Don't be shy about this one. If you've been delivering value with the other three post types, your audience has earned the right to be asked.

Your Weekly Posting Schedule

You don't need to post every day. You need to post consistently. Here's a simple weekly rhythm that works across all three platforms:

Monday — Tip Post. Start the week by giving something useful. Sets a positive tone and gets early-week engagement.

Wednesday — Proof Post. Mid-week is when most people are actively researching and making decisions. Show them what you can do.

Friday — Human Post or Direct Ask. End the week with something that either builds connection or drives action. Alternate between the two week to week.

Three posts a week. Same structure every week. That's it.

Platform-Specific Notes

Facebook
Your Facebook audience skews slightly older and is more likely to read a caption. Don't be afraid to write a few sentences of context. Include your phone number directly in the post — not everyone will click a link, but they'll call if the number is right there. Facebook is also where local community groups live. Join the ones relevant to your area and participate genuinely — not just to promote yourself.

Instagram
The visual does the heavy lifting here. Your photo or graphic needs to stop the scroll before the caption gets a chance. Use your bio link strategically — update it to point to whatever your current priority is (booking page, seasonal promotion, contact form). Stories are underused by most local businesses and worth exploring — quick behind-the-scenes clips, poll stickers asking simple questions, and "day in the life" content all perform well without requiring much production.

TikTok
Don't let TikTok intimidate you. The bar is lower than you think, and the organic reach for local businesses is still genuinely strong. Short, simple videos work best — a 30 to 60 second walkthrough of a job, a quick tip delivered straight to camera, or a satisfying before-and-after reveal. You don't need to be entertaining. You need to be real. TikTok's algorithm rewards consistency over perfection, so showing up regularly matters more than production quality.

The Caption Formula That Works Every Time

Every post caption — regardless of platform — should follow this basic structure:

Hook — Your first line needs to stop the scroll. Ask a question, make a bold statement, or call out your ideal customer directly. "If your gutters haven't been cleaned since last fall, read this."

Value — Deliver the point quickly. Don't bury it. Get to the useful or interesting part fast.

Call to Action — Tell them exactly what to do next. Call. Click. Visit. Book. DM. One action, clearly stated.

That's it. Hook, value, call to action. Write every caption with that structure and you'll be ahead of 90% of local businesses on social media.

The Three Mistakes That Kill Results

Posting without a call to action. Every post needs to point somewhere. Even a simple "give us a call if you need help" is better than nothing.

Going dark for weeks then posting five times in a row. Algorithms punish inconsistency, and so do audiences. Three times a week, every week, beats ten posts in two days followed by silence.

Making every post a promotion. If every time someone sees your content you're asking for something, they'll tune you out. Earn the ask with value first.

Your 10-Minute Content Routine

The reason most business owners fall off with social media is that it feels like a big production. It doesn't have to be.

At the end of every job, take one photo. One. Text it to yourself. On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, spend ten minutes turning what you've collected into posts. Write a simple caption using the hook-value-CTA formula, drop in your phone number or link, and schedule it.

Ten minutes. Three times a week. That's a social media presence that actually works.

One Last Thing

You don't need to be everywhere all at once. Pick two platforms where your customers are most likely to be and do those well before you add a third. Consistency on two platforms will always outperform sporadic posting across five.

Start simple. Stay consistent. Point everything back to a call, a click, or a visit.

That's the whole game.
